BIOGRAPHY
Blondie were the biggest commercial success to rise from New York's punk/new wave scene, amassing a string of adventurous but accessible pop singles in the '70s and '80s. Founded by Deborah Harry and Chris Stein, Blondie were one of the first acts on the CBGB scene to sign a record deal (and Harry became punk's first glamour girl), and their first two albums melded downtown energy with trashy '60s-influenced pop. With 1978's Parallel Lines, Blondie added some polish to their sound and were rewarded with a number one single, "Heart of Glass," while 1979's Eat to the Beat and 1980's Autoamerican found them flirting with dance music, hip-hop, and Caribbean sounds while earning critical and commercial success. Blondie split up after 1982's The Hunter, but Harry and Stein revived the band with 1999's No Exit, recording and touring periodically ever since. ~ Mark Deming
