Green Day is an American punk rock band formed in 1987 in East Bay, California. Green Day, along with California punk bands The Offspring and Blink-182, is often credited with reviving interest in punk rock in the 90s and early 2000s. Green Day's first albums were released under the independent record label Lookout! Records. With this they gained more and more fame, and more fans. In 1994 they became known to the general public worldwide with their album Dookie, which eventually sold more than 10 million copies in the United States alone. The three successive Green Day albums, Insomniac, Nimrod and Warning, did not have the huge success of Dookie, but were still successful. Insomniac and Nimrod went double platinum and Warning was awarded gold status. The rock opera American Idiot (2004), revived the band's success among the younger generation. This record has sold 5 million copies in the United States. The band's eighth studio album, 21st Century Breakdown, was released in 2009. The band released a trilogy of new albums in 2012, namely ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tré!. The band released their twelfth studio album Revolution Radio in October 2016. In February 2020, their thirteenth studio album Father of All Motherfuckers was released. Their fourteenth album, titled Saviors, was released on January 19, 2024. Green Day has sold over 65 million albums worldwide. The group has won five Grammy Awards. In 2010, a musical version of American Idiot was first performed on Broadway. The musical has been nominated for 7 Tony Awards, the most important awards in the musical field, and has received generally positive reviews.
